Do-it-yourself Tips for Dry Skin

by Barbara Ann Laroche

We all hate when our skin is not as we would like it to be. Dryness of the skin is a condition that affects more people in the world than people would think. It can be caused by a poor diet, environmental factors such as the sun, wind, cold weather, excessive bathing (specially with harsh soaps), inappropriate cosmetic use, or conditions such as dermatitis, eczema, or psoriasis. The fact that the skin cannot retain moisture and that the sebum level is low causes the skin to feel tight and rough. In this article we will look into a couple of home made remedies for dry skin

Essential oils work very well when applied over dry skin. Some of the oils that you can use are rose hip oil, lavender oil, chamomile, and Sandalwood oil. For example, rose hip oil is very rich in vitamin A and vitamin C, and both are very good for the skin. Another use for it is to reduce photo aging and scarring.

The fundamental principle of fighting dry skin is to drink plenty of water. Otherwise, no matter what you apply on your skin, you will never really solve the problem. Another tip is to take a bath and add to the water one cup of baking soda and if you want to even make it better, you can do the following: mix 1 cup of oatmeal, 1 cup of warm water, 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, and 1/2 cup baking soda in a mixer. You will get a soft paste. Let this mix run with the water as you are filling your tub to take a bath. You will experience the softness after it.

Other Options to Fight Dry Skin

Cucumbers are also very good for the skin and making a preparation with it will also help. After you apply the mix, you have to wait 10 minutes before you wash it off. If you do this a couple of times a week, you will see results very quickly. Another tip is to mix 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise with a spoon of baby oil and apply it on your skin or apply a thick layer of Vaseline. In both cases you must leave the product on your skin for about 20 minutes and then rinse it off with lukewarm water.

If you feel that your skin is not as dry as to have to follow these home made treatments, here are some tips for you: drink plenty of water, like we mentioned before, avoid very hot water when you shower because it dries your skin, when you will be exposed to the sun, make sure you use a good sun block to protect your skin. Also, use a moisturizing lotion or a dry skin balm daily.

Dry skin is a problem that affects many people all over the world. If this is not taken care of, it can lead to conditions such as eczema.
